I Heart Mom Can Cozy Crochet Pattern

I’ve made this Can Cozy for my mom for her upcoming birthday (it’s in the mail as I write this). I’ve been making her homemade gifts since I was four when I saw a picture of a tissue paper flower craft in a children’s magazine. I asked my mom to take me to my local craft store and with money from my piggy bank, I purchased the materials listed. Once at home, I spent the entire day in my room and made what would become my mom’s all-time favourite Mother’s Day gift.

Well that is until she gets this Crochet Can Cozy! Mom, if you’re reading this…I love you!

I Heart Mom Can Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

This I Heart Mom Can Cozy Crochet Pattern (below):

  • Includes a complete walk-through guide with pictures
  • Is a great introduction to colorwork for beginners, only requires knowledge of how to single crochet, chain stitch, slip stitch and read a pattern.
  • Also great for more advanced crocheters who love colorwork (but experience with colorwork is not required)
  • Includes full written instructions for the pattern and a chart/graph

Worried this is too advanced? It’s actually super easy…you CAN do it!!! (sorry, couldn’t myself!)

The I Heart Mom Can Cozy Crochet Pattern is written in English for right-handed crochet using standard US crochet terminology. If you’re more familiar with UK terminology, check out my US to UK Conversion Chart.

Mom Can Cozy Crochet Pattern Details

Size

The completed pattern will fit any standard 355 ml can (a regular beer, soda or pop can)

Skill Level

Easy – Colorwork and Simple Stitches

Materials

Yarn: Any two colors of worsted weight, medium (4) yarn. I recommend a 100% acrylic yarn with a skein weight of 4.5 oz / 127.5 g. The main color uses less than half a skein and only a few meters of the contrast color is needed.

Crochet Hook Size: H/8 (5.00 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Other Materials: scissors, yarn needle and stitch marker

Gauge:

  • The diameter of the bottom of the can cozy (diameter is the length of a line through the center that touches two points on the edge of the circle) is approximately 2.75 inches (7 cm).
  • The side of the can cozy is approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from top to bottom.
  • Each row around (on the side of the can cozy) is approximately 10 inches (25 cm).

Abbreviations:

st = stitch

sl st = slip stitch: insert hook into stitch, pull through yarn

sc = single crochet: insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull yarn through both loops

ch = chain: yarn over, pull though loop on hook

MC = Main Color: The bottom and background of the Can Cozy

CC = Contrast Color: The letters and heart

BLO = Back Loops Only: work your single crochet stitch into the back loops only

PM = Place (Stitch) Marker

Working with Two Colors

How to Crochet with Two Colors

New to colorwork? Read my step-by-step guide: How to Crochet with Two Colors. You’ll be a pro in colorwork in no time!

For this pattern, you will be working in a continuous spiral (you won’t turn your work) and you will be working on the right side only (the right side is also referred to as the front, outside or RS). When it comes time to add the contrast color, you will add/pick up and use the contrast color when working on the letters and heart symbol and carry the main color along the back (the inside/the wrong side) until you are ready to use it again.

Once you add the contrast color on Row 4, you will be carrying it all the way around until the letters / heart symbol are finished (at the end of Row 9).

How to Add/Switch/Change Colors:

With the color you are currently working with:

1) Insert hook into the next stitch. With current color, yarn over.

2) Still with current color, pull yarn through stitch (you will have two loops on your hook) but instead of finishing the single crochet stitch…

3) Put the new color on hook

4) Pull through new color, leaving the old color hanging (keep it attached to ball of yarn, don’t cut).

Give the previous color a slight tug to keep stitch tight.

How to Add, Switch and Change Colors in Crochet

Now use the new color until the pattern says to switch back. To switch back, repeat the same steps.

When you complete the color addition/switch, it counts as a stitch with the old color as you are setting up the next stitch with the new color.

Pattern Note: for this pattern, you will be working in the back loops only. The exact same instructions apply, just remember to only work the back loops.

Where to Add/Switch/Change Colors

When following the chart: always add/ switch color in the second half of the single crochet stitch (when you have two loops on your hook with the old color) BEFORE the chart shows the new color.

When following the written instructions: always add the new color in the second half of the last sc stitch of the current color (when you have two loops on your hook with the old color) BEFORE the written patterns says to use the new color.

Catching Floats

Once you add the contrast color, the color you are not working with will be carried along the back (the wrong side). These strands of yarn are “floating.”

In order to ensure these pieces of carried yarn don’t become too long, we need to “catch” them and incorporate them into the back of a stitch every 2-3 stitches.

How to Catch Floats

Insert your hook into the stitch and take the strand of the opposite color and place it on the hook (behind the stitch). Yarn over with the color you are working with and pull through. The opposite color should not have come through but instead be caught in the stitch (hidden from the front of the work). Give the opposite color a little tug.

As this is a pattern in the round, you’ll only be working on right side rows so you only need to know how to catch floats on right side rows.

How to Catch Floats on Right Side Rows in Crochet

Catching Floats Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in the back loops only. All the instructions still apply but you will only be working in the back loops.
  • The pattern does not indicate when to catch floats. You need to remember to do this every 2-3 stitches.
  • Always check each “catch” to ensure the opposite coloured yarn is not visible from the front.

Please note: This pattern and all images associated with this pattern cannot be copied, shared, altered or sold on your own. You are welcome to sell the finished product but please include a link (if online) and reference jototheworld.com.

Pattern Notes

  • The pattern has two sections: The Bottom of the Can Cozy and the Side of the Can Cozy.
  • The Pattern Chart applies to only the Side of the Can Cozy.
  • The numbers are reset when bottom is completed.
  • If you need help creating a magic ring/circle, Crochet365KnitToo has a great step by step photo tutorial here.

Bottom of Can Cozy Written Instructions

With main color, create a magic ring/circle.

Round 1: Sc 11 times into magic ring/circle. Pull tight. Join with a sl st into 1st sc. Do not turn. (11 sc)

Round 2: ch 1. 2 sc into first st (the same st where you joined), 1 sc into next st. *2 sc into next st, 1 sc into next st* repeat until there is one st left. 2 sc into last st. (17 sc). Join with a sl st into 1st sc. Do not turn.

Round 3: ch 1. 2 sc into first st (the same st where you joined), 1 sc, 1 sc. Repeat: *2 sc into st, 1 sc, 1 sc* around until there are 2 stitches left. 2 sc into next. 1 sc into last st. (23 sc). Join with a sl st into 1st sc. Do not turn.

Round 4: ch 1. 2 sc into first st (the same st where you joined), 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc. Repeat: *2 sc into st, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 sc* around until there are three stitches left. 2sc into next st, 1sc, 1sc. (29 sc). Join with a sl st. Do not chain.

Turn your hook and start working in the opposite direction.

Round 5: Sl st into the back loops of the last sc (not the st attached to the chain).

Row 4 and 5 directions

Place stitch marker as this is the first st of the row. Sl st into back loops of the next 2 stitches. Sc into BLO around. Join by sc into back loops of the 1st sl st (the st with the marker).

This now concludes the bottom section of the pattern. Do not fasten off.

Side of Can Cozy Written Instructions

Notes for Side of Can of Cozy:

  • The row numbers are now reset
  • The pattern chart (below) now applies
  • Each row has 29 stitches.
  • Never chain at the end of the row, join row with sc
  • Place your stitch marker on the first stitch of each row
  • Work into the back loops only (BLO) of every stitch (until the last row).
  • Once you add the contrast color, you need to catch your floats every 2-3 stitches.
  • Ensure all strands are always kept on the wrong side (the inside of the Can Cozy)
  • Add/switch colours when you have two loops with the current color on the last sc stitch BEFORE the new color stitch.

Important Note:

Every stitch is a single crochet (sc). The pattern does not say to sc because it gets too jumbled with all the back and forth between MC (Main Color) and CC (Contrast Color). Instead it says something like: MC 3, CC 4, which means: using the main color, single crochet for 3 stitches, add the contrast color on the last stitch of the main color and now using the contrast color, single crochet for 4 stitches.

Round 1: Still using your main color, sc into BLO of next st. PM. sc in BLO around. Join by sc into back loops of the 1st sc (the st with the marker).

Round 2: sc into back loops of next st. PM. sc into BLO around. Join by sc into back loops of 1st sl st (the st with the marker).

Round 3: Repeat row 2

Round 4: MC 1, CC 1, MC 3, CC 1, MC 2, CC 2, MC 2, CC 1, MC 3, CC 1, MC 4, CC 1, MC 4, CC 1, MC 2

Round 5: MC 1, CC 1, MC 3, CC 1, MC 1, CC 4, MC 1, CC 1, MC 3, CC 1, MC 3, CC 3, MC 3, CC 1, MC 2

Round 6: MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 2, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 2, CC 5, MC 2, CC 1, MC 2

Round 7: MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 2, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 1, MC 1, CC 7, MC 1, CC 1, MC 2

Round 8: MC 1, CC 5, MC 1, CC 4, MC 1, CC 5, MC 1, CC 3, MC 1, CC 3, MC 1, CC 1, MC 2

Round 9: MC 1, CC 2, MC 1, CC 2, MC 2, CC 2, MC 2, CC 2, MC 1, CC 2, MC 2, CC 1, MC 3, CC 1, MC 2, CC 1, MC 2. You can cut off the contrast color. Leave a tail to weave in.

Row 10: Join by sc into 1st (where the marker is). Place marker. Sc into BLO around.

Row 11: Join by sc into 1st (where the marker is). Place marker. Sc into BLO for 22 stitches (1st st + 22 st). There will be only 6 stitches left before stitch marker. Sl st VERY LOOSELY into the BLO of the next 6 st.

Row 12: When you get to the marker, sc into both loops of the st that the marker is in. This counts as first st. Sl st into next st into both loops. *sc into next, sl st into next* repeat around. When you get to the first sc, sl st. Fasten off and weave in loose ends.
